Gynaecologist in Sydney

Hello, I’m Dr I-Ferne Tan

As a gynaecologist and fertility specialist (and importantly, a mother), I understand the emotional and physical complexities that can arise when your body isn’t doing what you hoped it would.

With a Master in Reproductive Medicine and fellowships in advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery (aka keyhole surgery), my approach blends clinical and surgical expertise with the art of listening, helping you take control of your reproductive health at every stage of life.

Every woman’s journey is different. Whether you're navigating painful periods, unexplained bleeding, or fertility challenges, I’m here to support you with expertise, clarity, compassion, and individualised care tailored to your needs.

Fertility Testing and Diagnosis
A Safe Space for Your Fertility Concerns

A safe space for your concerns

I know first-hand how overwhelming it can feel to navigate fertility challenges — especially when it seems like you're facing them alone. That experience has given me a unique understanding of both the emotional and clinical sides of care. It also inspired me to become a gynaecologist, passionate about educating women on their reproductive health and fertility options.

At my practice, I offer both non-surgical and surgical treatment options, with a particular focus on advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. These techniques are designed to reduce recovery time and help you return to daily life sooner.

Whether you're seeking gynaecological care or fertility support, my goal is simple: to provide a safe, supportive environment where you feel heard, informed, and empowered. Together, we’ll build a treatment plan that reflects your needs, aligns with your values, and supports your goals. And I’ll be here with you every step of the way.

  • I work with a range of testing and diagnostic services that look at the full picture of your fertility or gynaecological concerns. From there, we can map out a comprehensive, personalised plan.

    • Egg Freezing (social): Typically offered to women under 38 years of age, social egg freezing lets women preserve eggs for a longer reproductive window.

    • Egg Freezing (medical): For women about to undergo cancer treatments, this helps them preserve healthy eggs.

    • Embryo Freezing: You won’t use every embryo from your IVF cycle right away. This lets us freeze some to use for a later cycle.

    • Sperm Freezing: For men about to undergo cancer treatments, this helps them preserve healthy sperm.

    • IVF: With this fertility treatment, we combine both partner’s eggs outside the body to form embryos. It can be a long process, but I’ll support you closely throughout.

    • IUI: This skips a few steps to place sperm directly in the uterus when you ovulate. IUI is often the first move to treat infertility, depending on your personalised plan.

    • Ovulation Induction: If we pinpoint irregular or infrequent periods as a cause of infertility, this treatment stimulates regular cycles with tablets or hormone injections.

    • Ovulation Tracking: With simple blood or ultrasound tests, we can understand your ‘fertile window’ (i.e. when you’re most likely to fall pregnant) so that you can time intercourse better.

    • Reproductive Surgery: This looks like any surgery done to restore or maintain fertility (of which there are a few.) I’ll make sure we explore both surgical and non-surgical options in your treatment.

Genetic Carrier Screening: A test that scans parents' blood to see the likelihood of passing a genetic condition onto a potential little one. This helps you make an informed decision about your family.

    • Preimplantation Genetic Testing: This checks embryos for certain genetic conditions or chromosome problems before they are implanted during IVF. If anything arises, we’ll navigate it together.

IVF and Fertility Treatments

Every fertility journey is different, and your care should reflect that. I take the time to understand your unique circumstances, goals, and concerns so we can create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you. Whether you're navigating IVF, recurrent miscarriage, genetic conditions, or considering reproductive surgery, I offer personalised, comprehensive care every step of the way. I personally perform all my surgeries and fertility procedures, so you'll receive consistent, expert care from someone who knows your story.

Gynaecology Services

Women’s health has too often been overlooked and under-prioritised. I also understand that it can feel overwhelming to seek help, but please don’t ignore your symptoms - early diagnosis and care can make a real difference. I specialise in abnormal bleeding, period pain, and ovarian or uterine masses, and offer expert management of endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, polyps, vaginal prolapse and ovarian cysts. My approach focuses on developing personalised, long-term treatment plans. I'm trained in advanced laparoscopy (keyhole surgery), and provide a range of in-office and surgical options. I prioritise clear communication, education, and respect, so you feel supported and confident in every decision that you make.

Reproductive surgery

I use minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, to diagnose and treat a range of fertility-related issues — such as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps, scar tissue, and reversal of sterilisation procedures like tubal ligation or vasectomy. I also offer awake (office) hysteroscopy in the comfort of my private rooms, using advanced techniques and specialised equipment that eliminates the need for general anaesthesia.

With specialist training in advanced keyhole surgery, I focus on achieving precise results while protecting your fertility wherever possible. As a dual-trained reproductive surgeon and fertility specialist, I’m able to manage both the surgical and hormonal aspects of your fertility treatment. This means fewer appointments, a smoother experience, and treatment plans tailored to your individual needs.

I’ll always take the time to answer your questions and talk you through your options, so you feel supported and confident in your decisions.

FAQs

  • Choosing the right specialist starts with finding someone with solid expertise and experience across reproductive health. It’s important to feel comfortable and supported, so look for a specialist whose approach aligns with your values and who listens to your concerns.

  • The costs of fertility treatments can vary based on what you need and the approach we take. I’ll make sure to discuss all the financial aspects with you openly, so you understand the potential expenses and options available.

  • The success rates of fertility treatments depend on the treatment type and what it's for. For instance, the pregnancy rate:

    • Doubles after surgery for endometriosis.

    • Sits at 10-20% with IUI (depending on the reason for IUI).

    • Doubles after hysteroscopy and removal of endometrial polyps.

    • After IVF is 35% per embryo and 50% per IVF cycle altogether.

  • The length of the fertility treatment process varies, but as a guide:

    • Hysteroscopy (including office hysteroscopy) takes 20 minutes.

    • Laparoscopy can take many hours, depending on the surgery required.

    • IVF process takes 2-3 weeks.

    • IUI takes 2 weeks.

    • Ovulation induction takes 2 weeks.

  • Like any medical procedure, fertility treatments come with potential risks and side effects. I’ll be transparent about these risks and how we manage them, ensuring you feel informed and supported every step of the way. Your safety and comfort are my top priorities.

  • In your initial appointment, we’ll deep dive into your fertility history, goals, and treatment options to conceive. I’ll listen to any concerns, answer all your questions, and work with you to create a personalised plan.
